Neil Gibson vowed to sharpen up Altrincham's attacking play after their second pre-season friendly ended in a goalless draw at Chorley's Grant Store Victory Park stadium on Tuesday night.
After last Saturday's game at Vauxhall Motors was cancelled, in the wake of the half-time abandonment away to Wythenshawe Town, Alty boss Gibson was glad to be back in action as he continues preparations for another National League campaign.
But while the Robins found the net twice in their opening friendly at Colwyn Bay, there was some concern at their failure to capitalise on a dominant second-half performance against their National League North hosts.
"We were a little bit sloppy at times in the first half," said Gibson, whose side play their first home friendly of the summer against local rivals Macclesfield at The J.Davidson Stadium on Saturday.
"But, in the second half, the players took on board the information we gave them, and I thought we looked really strong.
"But we've got to be brighter in the final third.
"We dominated possession and took up some good positions but couldn't make the most of it.
"The problem was that the final delivery lacked the quality needed when we got the ball out wide and we turned down opportunities to shoot when they presented themselves.
"We've probably got to work a bit more on that.
"We know from last season that's an area we want to improve on - we want to create more opportunities and score more goals.
"That will come, because we have players who are getting used to each other and working on combinations and timing of movements.
"We still have to iron a few things out, but there is more to come and we know the areas we have to work on.
"Overall. I thought it was a competitive work-out and a good, honest game of football between two teams trying to give everything they had, and that's exactly what was needed after we had a bit of a break in the pre-season programme."
