Blackburn Rovers Women are top of the Barclay's Women's Championship after continuing their impressive start with a 2-0 win against Lewes.

Simon Parker's side had already taken nine points from their opening four games, with three victories and one defeat. Rovers added to their tally with another three-point haul, leaving them one point ahead of Sunderland in second.

A second-half brace from Georgia Walters was enough to get Rovers over the line after needing goalkeeper Alex Brooks to keep them in the match until half-time.

Rovers improved after the break and got themselves in front when captain Walters netted her first of the season. Meg Hornby collected the ball from inside her half and drove at the defence, eventually setting the ball from Walters to finish emphatically into the roof of the net.

The second followed soon after with Walters converting from the spot after Sophie Whitehouse had been brought down. Rovers dug in and ensured they took the points back to Lancashire, recording a second successive clean sheet in the process.

After the match, Rovers boss Parker said: "We're really happy with the result and the performance in the second half, in contrast to the first half. It was always going to be a tough game.

"We know where Lewes are at the moment. They're fighting for every point, they're raring and up for the game, a club I used to be at. I'm really happy to get the result.

"We have shown this season, a reslience even when things aren't going that well. We defend the box well, we were poor in the first half but we made changes to the system and we anticipated Lewes would play a back five and they moved to a four.

"The game planm wasn't working and we had to be better within it, we gave the ball away. In the second, we made changes and the increased intensity, maybe players understanding the roles more and we had moments of quality."
