MATTY Kosylo lit up The J.Davidson Stadium with a wonder goal and was backed to produce more of the same after Altrincham banished any lingering relegation fears with a 5-0 demolition of Weymouth on Tuesday night.

Alty were in danger of being dragged into the National League survival scrap after a barren spell either side of Christmas, but a return of 10 points from their last five games has lifted them above this coming Saturday’s visitors Eastleigh on goal difference into 14th place.

Their latest win was never in doubt, once Kosylo wrong-footed a close-marking defender on the left and cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable rising drive into the top far corner from the tightest of angles.

The Alty midfielder quickly added a second, and Alty were 4-0 up by half time, with Dan Mooney rounding off the rout with a fifth goal near the end.

“It was fully deserved, and we could easily have had a couple more,” beamed Alty boss Phil Parkinson, after his biggest win as a National League manager.

“The defence was bang on, which is something we’ve been building towards, because if we can take care of that, our football will do the rest.

“For Matty’s opener, I haven’t seen a goal like that from him for a while, but it’s something he is certainly capable of.

“He is very unselfish, but we have been encouraging him to shoot and have a go himself, and maybe that will give him the belief to back himself a bit more.

“We know he can produce moments like that, so hopefully there will be more to come.

“Having the same back four for a few games has made a difference and provided some continuity.

“We want the centre-backs to forge a partnership, which they are doing, and the two young on-loan full-backs are bedding in really well.

“There were some really special goals.

“Our finishing knocked the wind out of Weymouth’s sails, and though it has been a tough old season, especially at the midway point, I always knew we would come out the other end.

“It is such a together changing room, and the players deserve all the credit for that.”
