Sale United Ladies have won their very first piece of silverware, clinching the Cheshire Women’s & Youth Championship East title.

The Reds completed the season undefeated to earn promotion to the Premier Division, scoring 41 goals and conceding just nine along the way

Signing off the season with a pair of 9-0 wins, Dave Atkinson’s side faced an anxious wait for the crown with other teams having games in hand. However, Nantwich’s 4-2 win over Manchester Rovers secured the silverware, meaning the league leaders could not be caught.

Manager Atkinson was proud with his team’s efforts over the season – prompting him to quote a Take That song.

“We’ve finally done it, league champions 2020/21,” he said. “Well done to our team of invincibles.

“In the lyrics to a Take That hit, the words read: ‘We’ve come so far, we’ve reached so high... we’re not invincible'. Well, we’ve proven to be invincible! Five years ago, our journey began when a new team first entered the Cheshire Women’s & Youth League – a tough league with many great teams.

“Over the years, we have improved with great commitment and enthusiasm. We’re all in this 100 per cent and have helped each other progress as a team.

He added: “Our ultimate goal was to keep improving and possibly win something. Well, we’ve not lost a competitive game since 2019.

“We’re so proud. Everyone has earned this. Next up, it’s the Premier Division.”
