PHIL Parkinson called for one final push from his Altrincham players after they moved to within 90 minutes of promotion to the Vanarama National League with a fourth straight away win over York City at Bootham Crescent on Saturday.

Alty face a play-off final against Boston United at York Street this coming Saturday after turning on the style again with goals from Josh Hancock and substitute Tom Peers in a richly-deserved 2-0 victory against a full-time York team who started the game as odds-on favourites.

After potentially bringing the curtain down on football at Bootham Crescent – with York still hopeful of moving to their new stadium in time for the start of next season – Alty are now aiming to dash Boston’s hopes of signing off with a win, as they prepare to ditch York Street for a new ground.

It will take another special effort from his players, according to Alty boss Parkinson.

“Boston are the most improved team this year,” said the Alty boss.

Messenger Newspapers:

“Compared to last year, the recruitment they have done, particularly lads coming in from Harrogate, has improved them no end, and of course we owe them one after they gave us a roasting at their place earlier this season.

“I think that is when we were at our weakest – in fact, that game was probably the turning point for our season, and we haven’t looked back.

“We are looking forward to the game, but we know we are going to have to be at our very best.”

While Hancock and Peers got the goals, Parkinson said it was a real team effort.

“It was great to see all the players contribute so much to what was an outstanding win at York.,” he added. “To go there and do that in what could be the last game played at that stadium feels really special.

“It is an absolutely unbelievable achievement for a club like Alty, and I’m proud of every single one of the players for making it happen.

“We have now got a fantastic opportunity next Saturday, and we will be doing our utmost to exploit it.”
