TWO Manchester United greats combined to win a local golf tournament.

Dunham Forest Golf Club and Maxitours Golf came together, using stringent medical advice around the coronavirus and an excellent course and clubhouse, to provide a great stage for a full house of more than 110 players to enjoy a superb day in the sun.

Tour organiser Tim Maxwell, the professional at Knutsford Golf Club, was delighted with the day and thanked the players and all at Dunham Forest for observing all of the precautions and advice to make this a great day for many local players looking to win the Xentum Classis.

The pairing of Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, key figures of the glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, were the two to come out on top.

Tim said: “The course was playing shorter than usual with all the par 5s in range for the bigger hitters.

“There were four teams tied for second place with 46 points.

"Ian Broughan and Gary Furlong took fifth, Macclesfield's Brendan Leighton and Neil Drummond were fourth, Wilmslow’s Jim Caldwell and James Cash had a super back nine to take third but Roger Percival and Andy Wright from Lymm had a superior last three holes to claim second place.

“Winning the Xentum Classic were the legendary Manchester United combination of Ryan Giggs (12) and Nicky Butt (12).

“Dunham member Giggs had one of the most cultured left foots in the world but he plays golf right handed.

"It was hard man Butt who did most of the damage on the front nine but then Giggs took over in injury time with a couple of great pars on the 17th and 18th.

“He had to be restrained from swirling his shirt above his head and running around the clubhouse after smashing home a three-footer at the last!

“Well played chaps and thanks to everyone for playing. What a great day!”
