THERE was a superb field of 160 players from across the region in the competition for the Houldsworth Cup, organised by the Balfour and Houldsworth Committee and played at Ellesmere Golf Club in a BB Bogey competition.

There were some superb scores reflecting the quality of the course and the winning card of +10 could be a record for the competition which has run since 1987.

It was played on Father’s Day and fitting that Ashton-on-Mersey father-and-son duo John and Luke Aikenhead were the winners.

There were also good scores for Andrew Barlow and Jon Jones (Worsley) on +8, and Bob Hill and Danny Beeley from the host club with +7.

The B&H committee, led by John McKenna, were also delighted with the discovery of a five-inch miniature of the Houldsworth Cup made in 1897.

It is one of a pair presented to the original winner of the Houldsworth when it was played for at Timperley in 1897 and won by the Disley duo of DG Scofield and J Howie Smith.

McKenna is currently the secretary of Old Manchester Golf Club and he collects golf memorabilia and purchased the miniature at an auction.

He took it to the last meeting of the B&H committee.
