Years of hard work were rewarded as Trafford MV Rugby Club Mini/Junior section won the title of ‘Mini Club Of The Year’ at the National Rugby Awards Dinner and Presentation Day held at Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby Union.

A group of junior players, parents and coaches travelled by coach to the award ceremony and were kept in suspense until the announcement was made. MV were up against clubs from Cheltenham, Reigate, Droitwich and Farnham and to say that MV were surprised was something of an understatement. The Trafford MV juniors are called the Hawks after founder Greg Hawkins started the section many moons ago as a way of creating our own talent and also to give the youth in the community an outlet for their physical energy and also as a conduit to community and club involvement and responsibility.

The club now starts children off from three years of age in a safe and structured gradual introduction into the much loved sport of Rugby Union. The children develop the skills of the sport alongside other personal assets such as leadership, respect, teamwork and discipline plus the ability to win and lose games honestly and with respect for the referee and opposition. MV take the children all the way through to being young adults when work, university and Senior Rugby then take over.

MV works closely with schools and teachers in the Trafford borough offering coaching advice and help and is always looking to introduce new players into the sport. With the Rugby World Cup, being held in Japan this year, just around the corner the Club are looking for an upsurge in interest among young people as TV coverage will be at an all time high for the sport. The Club will be opening it’s doors to new players whatever their age on Sunday morning from 10.15am as the mini/juniors begin their season on the bountiful fields of MacPherson Park (M33 6LR). If you come down you will see fields awash with young boys and girls relishing their time of freedom in the mud and engaging with kids from other schools and communities. It’s a fabulous sight to see so many youngsters enjoying sport in one place.

In addition to the players the Club is very proud to have a fantastic group of volunteer coaches and administrators looking after the junior section covering all aspects of the game such as safe guarding, player welfare, refereeing, coaching, health and safety, kit management, pitch marking and much more. The team of volunteers are currently lead by Mini/Junior Chairman Inigo Brindle who can rely totally on this great back up team.

Trafford MV will be open over the coming weeks for many of the crunch matches of the World Cup so if you want to bring the children down socially please do so or come down on a Sunday morning to the registration desk from 10.15am. We look forward to welcoming lots of new young players.
