TERRY Crewe has been a dedicated and active member of Sale Golf Club for 31 years and is anticipating the 32nd will be his most memorable as the club captain.

Crewe, who has a current handicap of 14 and a best of 10, said: “Sale GC is possibly the friendliest club around, with a challenging course, and you can play competition golf at least twice a week and that doesn’t include team matches and knockouts.

"With more than 70 volunteers working relentlessly on behalf of the club, it’s like a well-oiled machine. I love it.

“My other favourite course is Royal Liverpool and my favourite hole at Sale is the fourth because you can walk off with an easy four or an eight.

“My other hobbies are theatre and music and supporting Manchester United and my own golfing highlight was winning the Richard Burton Trophy Claret Jug at Sale.

"This is a unique tournament for Sale as Richard Burton was the Sale professional when he won The Open Championship in 1939 – the last club professional to do this.

“For my captain’s charity I will be supporting the incoming Mayor of Trafford’s charities – the Alex Hulme Trust and Wythenshawe Hospital Charity.

“I have a great team supporting me on my voyage in 2019 – president Peter Broadbent, who was captain in 2003, and his wife Carol, who was lady captain in 2008 and the first lady to be the club president in 2017.

“My lady captain is Jenny Page, a great player who played a big part in the success of Sale ladies in winning the Manchester and District Ladies' Golf Association's Bell Cup in 2018 and junior captain is Jess Jordan, who is 13 years old and attends Altrincham College in Trafford.

“It was her grandad who got Jess into golf when she was eight years old.

“Grandad is everything from mentor to caddy and takes her playing every weekend.

“At Sale, Jess has been supported by all of the team – Mike Hobson, Pete McKenzie, the president, lady captain and myself – and she is really looking forward to her year as junior captain and she has also enjoyed being coached by Ollie Smith at Ashton-on-Mersey..

“On her first outing as junior captain she led her team of Mike and James Hobson and club manager Ben Thompson to victory in the captain's drive-in Texas Scramble.”
