SALE FC Rugby Club have launched Trafford’s first school girl rugby team.

The team, Trafford Girls Rugby, is for girls in Years 7 to 10 and is the only one of its kind in the area.

It is hoped it will become the feeder team for Sale 1861 – the joint women’s team for Sale FC and Sale Sharks.

It was the brainchild of Andy Hughes, Sale FC’s community coach and first team captain.

He said: “There are a lot of young women who are passionate about rugby but have nowhere to play or train after the age of 12, when girls and boys are no longer permitted to play together.

“At Sale FC we want to create a rugby club that is inclusive and caters for anyone with a passion for the sport, hence why Trafford Girls Rugby team was born.”

The team trains every Monday evening from 6pm to 7.30pm. It is for girls of all abilities in Years 7 to 10 who attend high schools in the Trafford borough.

Trafford Girls Rugby is the latest in a number teams to join the club, whose other recent additions include Sale 1861, Walking Rugby and Social Rugby.
