THE annual gentleman’s dinner at Sale Golf Club had a full house as they celebrated another great season on their superb course.

Captain David Carlile gave a warm welcome to guests and long-standing friends from Dunscar and Worsley Golf Club, with Dunscar captain, Bill Taylor, replying on behalf of the guests.

One of the highlights of the season was winning the Men’s Mersey Bowl in a dramatic finale.

The main star of the night was their plus-one handicapper, John Russell, who enjoyed individual and team success as he showed his enduring class with three ‘major’ trophies in a memorable season of quality golf.

In the Jubilee Plate, Russell won the gross prize and was also the nett runner-up to Amjad Butt, and he also took the coveted Scratch Trophy.

He formed an unstoppable team with Steve Snape to win the Foursomes Matchplay and he was also a key member of the Mersey League team, filling in for injured professional Mike Stewart with some impressive results.

The other ‘major’ winners were: Scratch knockout – Jack Bullough; President’s prize – Andrew Edmunds; Fourball matchplay – John Mayoh and Dan Witterick; Five and Six Day winner – Paul Hadley; Peace Trophy – Amjad Butt; life members – Mike Bishop; most improved player – Rob Moore; top team player – Andrew Edmunds; Captain’s Prize – Dan Walmsley.
