PUPILS at a Flixton school have been punching above their weight after a new boxing course was introduced.
Every Wednesday, Wellacre Academy has introduced a programme of activities, from which students can choose sessions, including cryptography, astronomy, debating, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, STEM, Japanese, BBC School report and the latest activity boxing.
The activity was introduced as a co-curricular choice by former Wellacre pupil Billy McNamara, who returned to launch his own boxing club.
Billy explains: “When I was invited to be part of the activity programme at Wellacre, I jumped at the opportunity. I wanted to give something back to Wellacre as I loved my time here.”
“Wellacre was really supportive when I was a student and they were always there for me, even after I left. They have always welcomed me back to what is a great community school.”
Billy left school in 2009 to pursue a BTEC sport at Pendleton College before studying a BSc Sport Science degree at Edge Hill University.
Since leaving university he has established Urmston Boxing Club earlier this year.
He adds: “I think boxing should be taught in all schools. It brings kids of all academic and sporting abilities together and helps build their confidence.
“Some Wellacre students are already part of Urmston Boxing Club and it has given them a chance to be leaders, as they act as role models for our younger members.”
Wellacre sys it aims to enhance the learning opportunities for pupils to provide life experiences and enhance skills and the opportunity to participate in varying co-curricular areas that will improve their CV.
