SALE Golf Club ladies' team picked up one of the region’s top trophies when they won the Bell Cup in dramatic style at Prestbury, beating Turton in the final of a competition with more than 80 clubs in the original entry.

Their East Cheshire Business Ladies' team progressed through their league and knockout stages to reach the East Cheshire finals at Davenport GC where wins from Sue Oldham and Jenni Page saw them beat Hazel Grove 2-1 to win a place in the Cheshire finals against the West Cheshire champions.

The final was held at Prenton Golf Club where Sale took on West Cheshire champions Vale Royal Abbey.

Oldham gave Sale an early lead but Vale Royal pinned it back with a win against Sara Young.

It was then down to the final match which went to the 19th hole with Page securing victory for the Sale team to complete a great double for the club.

The latest Manchester Alliance fixture at Leigh GC saw a full field featuring many local players.

The star of the day was Craig Corrigan who kept up his recent run of hot form with a fine double success.

He topped the individual professional contest, posting 40 points to finish two ahead of Phil Archer (Poulton Park), Martyn Hamer (Davyhulme Park) and Andy Palmer (Chorley) who won the assistant pro prize.

Corrigan completed his second double of the season as he found an excellent partner in home star Mark Riley, who took them to 47 points to cruise to victory in the pro-am section.

They finished five points clear of Mark Pearson and Chris Harding (Prestwich) with Tim and Simon Maxwell (Knutsford) winning third spot after a card play-off on 41 points from Archer and Dave Morris (Poulton Park), Hamer and Doug Craig (Davyhulme Park) and Scott Howarth and Peter Botteman (Davenport).

Home players dominated the am-am section, led by Stuart Lennon and Chris Harrison with 44 points.

A card play-off on 42 points saw the Leigh monopoly broken by Stamford duo Paul Traynor and Richard Margrave, who edged out Leigh’s Vinny Doyle and Ian Ainscough.
