MANCHESTER Storm had a mixed weekend with a defeat at reigning Elite League champions Cardiff Devils before recording their biggest win of the season so far with a 6-2 victory against Glasgow Clan at the Storm Shelter on Sunday night.

Storm went down 4-1 in Cardiff which frustrated assistant coach Mike Morin who said: "Cardiff are a good side but we let ourselves down gifting them a couple of goals.”

A long coach journey home ended at 2.30am on Sunday and the squad re-grouped to prepare for the game against Glasgow Clan.

Clan, coached by GB head coach Pete Russell, arrived in Altrincham looking for a repeat performance against Storm who they beat 4-2 in September.

However, Storm had other ideas and put in a big performance to win in front of their loyal fans.

Mike Hammond continued his comeback with two goals and Rob Linsmayer also scored a couple.

Dallas Ehrhardt opened the scoring with a long-range effort and Luke Moffat was his usual busy self, scoring Storm’s other goal.

The previous Wednesday, Storm’s never-say-die attitude was demonstrated when they trailed Nottingham Panthers three times before beating them 4-3 with a goal in overtime to give them a great chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup.

Ciaran Long was deservedly named man of the match for his two goals including the winner, while Hammond and captain Dane Byers were the other scorers on the night.

Head coach Ryan Finnerty said: “It was a great performance by the whole squad.

"Scoring goals from close range is part and parcel of the sport and it’s something we have been lacking.

"The return of Mike Hammond has been a massive boost for us as he is a great team player and brings out the best in the players around him.”

This weekend Storm play fourth-placed Coventry Blaze home and away, the home clash up first on Saturday (7pm).
