ALTRINCHAM surrendered their unbeaten away record to a late goal in Northumberland when they lost 2-1 at Blyth Spartans on Saturday in National League North.

But a glaring miss from Tom Peers in the final moments should have salvaged a point for the Robins.

Altrincham started the better side against a Spartans team with just a single win to their name this season, albeit a thumping 8-1 victory at home to Chester FC.

But it was the hosts who were to take a 26th-minute lead. Some quick interplay between Sean Reid and Lewis Horner culminated in Reid's quick-thinking lob over Alty keeper Elliot Wynne.

However, straight from the restart, Altrincham equalised.

The ball was worked up the middle to Josh Hancock who slotted home a low shot from the edge of the box.

Blyth improved after the break but neither side was able to land a killer blow and the game appeared to be heading for an honourable draw.

But with seven minutes remaining, Sean Williams attempted a clearance from the left of his own goal, only for the ball to strike an opponent.

The ball was worked towards the Blyth left where Jarrett Rivers was allowed the time to get it out from under his feet before planting a rising shot into the back of the net from 15 yards.

Despite this late blow, Alty substitute Peers made a hash of a gilt-edged chance to level the score once more in the 88th minute.

Fellow substitute James Poole had forced goalkeeper Peter Jameson to parry his well-struck shot, only for Peers to lift the loose ball comfortably over the gaping net from close range.

There was to be no reprieve for Altrincham who dropped to 13th as a result and they will look to respond at home to Curzon Ashton on Saturday.
