TRAFFORD suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of local rivals Radcliffe in their Bank Holiday derby at the First Point Shawe View Stadium.

Despite last week's disappointing 1-0 defeat at Kidsgrove, Tom Baker's side went into Monday's clash on a high after a 4-1 FA Cup preliminary-round triumph at Darwen 48 hours earlier.

But Radcliffe brought them crashing back down to earth.

The visitors were on top throughout, displaying greater pace, skill, organisation and balance, and twice went close in the opening minutes when skipper Rick Smith saw his goalbound header cleared off the line by Andy Langford before Ben Wharton struck a 20-yard drive that was deflected against the bar.

In the 24th minute Radcliffe forged ahead when Tunde Owalabi stepped inside Keil O’Brien and shot home from 15 yards via the foot of the post.

Owalabi scored again in the 38th minute when he dispossessed Anthony Brown and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing James Coates.

The game was as good as over six minutes into the second half when Scott Metcalfe swung a corner to the back post and Smith headed home totally unmarked.

And Wharton made it 4-0 in the 59th minute when he cracked a great low drive into the bottom corner from 25 yards after Mark Derbyshire had lost the ball on the halfway line.

Radcliffe goalkeeper Ollie Martin had to wait until the 83rd minute before he had a save of any note to make, pushing a Matty Crothers thunderbolt past his left-hand upright.

Three minutes later Radcliffe completed the rout when Jordyn Fitton crossed from the left and Wharton rose to steer a fine header past Coates from 10 yards.

On Saturday in the cup at Darwen, Trafford turned on the power in the final 15 minutes to win through to the First Qualifying Round.

The visitors totally dominated the first period with Darius Palma twice going close in the opening minutes and Matty Bryan and Ally Brown heading wide from good positions.

The incessant pressure finally told in the 18th minute when Declan Rydings crossed from the right and Langford rose to head home from eight yards.

Aaron Burns then saw a goal disallowed for a marginal offside decision and Trafford were punished for their profligacy in the second half as Darwen pushed forward for the first time and in the 52nd minute Trafford keeper Coates failed to deal with a long high cross-shot from the right by Harrison Green and the ball floated in off the back post.

Trafford manager Baker introduced substitutes Derbyshire and Ross Davidson and Derbyshire coolly steered a header past Ryan Tweddle in the 76th minute to make it 2-1.

Five minutes later Matty Bryan scored his first goal in a Trafford shirt when he broke clear, rounded Tweddle and slotted home.

Further goals seemed inevitable as Trafford bombarded the hosts' goal and after Bryan saw Tweddle push his shot onto the post, the same player made it 4-1 when he collected a through ball by Davidson and fired past the advancing keeper.

Last Wednesday, 10-man Kidsgrove stunned Trafford when star man Ant Malbon struck a 76th-minute winner to earn his side the win.

Trafford must attempt to put Monday's demoralising and embarrassing defeat behind them when they travel to play Runcorn Linnets on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
