TRAFFORD MV began their final stages of pre-season with a 31-31 friendly draw against Leigh RFC, following Llandudno pulling out of the planned fixture.

Both teams had large squads and so frequent changes in playing strengths were obvious throughout.

Trafford opened the more lively of the teams with early scores for Pat Eccles and Rob Dutton for a 12-0 lead and MV continued to be the stronger outfit for the first half.

Both teams showed plenty of running but it was obvious in this first outing of the season the physical side of the game needs plenty of work over the next couple of games before league action begins. Players were missing tackles and easy yards were being made.

Half time saw the teams change ends at 19-5 for MV.

Multiple changes for both teams at the interval saw a switch in fortunes as Leigh began to get the upper hand.

However, MV scored further second-half tries through Jamie Kingdon, Leon Passley and James Matthie with Eccles adding conversions.

MV's new head coach Richard Phillips was able to get a feel of his team and can now see how they perform in match situations and when under pressure.

There is a good base there from past seasons' performances but plenty of room for improvement if MV are to make their mark in the ADM Lancashire Premier League this season.

MV are still awaiting the return of a couple of players from summer breaks and are also looking to add new players to their squad and anyone interested in joining should contact Greg on 07834 857905.
