TRAFFORD MV were frozen out of action in the North Lancs/Cumbria Division last weekend, though there was some league action.

The big game of the day saw a clash of Cumbrian sides Keswick and Aspatria at the top of the table which saw an exchange of places, with Aspatria winning 17-8 to head the league with Christmas approaching.

The unexpected break gave Trafford MV time to look at the levels of rugby within the club, which shows a healthy development with rugby for all ages becoming the norm.

For many seasons the mini/junior rugby section at MV has been the envy of many North West clubs, with young players starting at four years of age and progressing through to senior colts at under-17s age group level.

Several of MV's older youth players have gone on to represent Lancashire and Cheshire age group teams – the latest being Rory Canham and Luke Cox in the Cheshire U20s.

Fielding three senior teams on a regular basis maintains MV's playing strength and now the club is seeking to accommodate the occasional and former players too.

The club is looking to put an over-35s vets XV out in February (the second time this season) and are on the lookout for any older players that may wish to get involved.

Club officials say if good numbers can be put together, regular monthly fixtures could be on the cards.

Trafford MV have also adopted walking rugby for over-50s male and females in mixed teams on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm.

This has taken off really well and they are looking to grow this in the new year.

There is also mixed touch rugby each Wednesday, which is ideal for novices to learn the game or to try something a bit different.

This weekend MV welcome Tarleton as first XV opposition in the league, kick off 2.15pm, with free admission for spectators at MacPherson Park.
