OLLIE Cooper’s brace set Urmston Hockey Club's men’s firsts on course for pole position in North West Hockey Men's League Division Two West in their 5-1 win against Bebington on Saturday.
He was joined on the scoresheet by in-form James Duke, who also netted a double, and a goal for Stefan Wasilewski in a victory overshadowed by a broken finger for key playmaker Charlie Weems.
The win put the Greens a point clear at the top but they couldn’t take advantage on Sunday when a depleted side fell 6-2 to a strong Windermere outfit.
Wasilewski and captain Robin Cooper scored with Brad Bates orchestrating the midfield and making key defensive clearances in a man-of-the-match performance.
Elsewhere, Danielle Harvey’s hat-trick helped the ladies’ seconds beat University of Salford ladies’ 3-1 to move up to fifth in the table with Cas Butcher putting in a stellar players’ player performance.
Goalkeeper Jude Ashworth’s third Players’ Player performance in her debut season kept the score to 7-0 for the ladies’ firsts against Crewe Vagrants with Stacey Brown’s hand injury reducing the side to 11 at 3-0.
The men’s seconds were undone by a strong Preston men’s thirds, going down 6-1 despite another man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Alex Lay.
The men’s thirds also lost, 6-0 to Warrington men’s seconds with Dan Downes picking up the captains’ player vote.
