A SCHOOL in Sale has won a platinum award for their consistently high standards of sport in the school.

St Marys CE Primary is the only Trafford School to receive the award and is one of only 104 schools nationally.

The School Games Mark Award is offered on four levels, bronze, silver, gold and platinum. It is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Schools achieving Platinum must have been awarded Gold for the last five academic years.

Anthony Lang, deputy head and P.E co-ordinator of the school said: "I have had a love of sport from being young and have had a lot of positive experiences and it is something I am passionate about.

"I am blown away to be the only school in Trafford to win the award and one out of only 104 nationally - I am so proud - this is just what we do here but it's so good to be recognised for it.

"We have entered over 40 different competitions and festivals across the last year from year one upwards and every child at some point in the year will get the chance to be involved in a competition or festival.

"We have a lot of extra curricular activities before school, dinner time and after school clubs with so many different sports like: Taekwondo, rugby, football, dodgeball, and a high percentage of the school take part."

To be awarded the platinum award, each school had to submit a detailed case study. St Marys completed a case study on sports leadership in the school to prove the opportunities the children have to act as sport leaders.

The school received a special plaque to commemorate the achievement and will be entered into a draw to win a surprise presentation visit from a celebrity guest.

Chris Dyson, Trafford School Games Manager said: ‘Being awarded Platinum level of the School Games Mark is a fantastic achievement for St Marys CE Primary School. The award is well deserved and is testament to all the hard work by everyone at school in ensuring that the highest quality PE and Sport opportunities are provided for the pupils’.
