PIANO tutor Richard Dinsmore set up his own business without any prior business experience. The key to his success? Self-belief and determination.

When 27-year-old Richard found himself working as an Operations Manager for a training company in Chester, he realised just how far he’d drifted from his passions of music and German.

After two years of a job that Richard had no interest in, the graduate decided to move back to his family home in Sale.

He said: “I was not enjoying my job, my life had become very boring and I felt isolated from family and friends.

“My father had serious health issues and was hospitalised and that was the final push I needed to decide to pack up my life and move back to Sale.”

After returning to Trafford, Richard’s time was split between caring for his father and pursuing jobs he had no interest in.

“At that point, I made a conscious decision to properly focus on music full time and actually turn all of these negative experiences into a positive one.”

In November last year, Richard began working as a professional musician and piano tutor.

Sadly, in January, Richard’s father passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

That was the push he needed and, after deciding to focus on his future, he began growing his business.

Since then, Richard’s business has grown dramatically and he now has close to 20 students. He works as a piano teacher for a local grammar school and, as well as tutoring students at their homes, also works as a freelance musician.

Richard said: “Strangely it was probably only through the sad set of circumstances I faced, that meant all of my life clicked into place.

“I believe everyone has the ability to turn their passion into a business. I think that with enough self-belief and determination anyone can succeed, they just need to believe in themselves first of all.

“It takes a creative mind, being innovative, and being able to battle through any self doubt, of which I had a lot, to realise something amazing at the end of it.”
