MP GRAHAM Brady has asked ministers to show compassion for Equitable Life policy holders who lost their savings when the life assurance company collapsed.

Around one million people lost their savings when Equitable folded seven years ago.

Despite two reports from the Parliamentary Ombudsman detailing regulatory failures and calling on policy holders to be compensated, ministers have failed to do so.

Last Tuesday Liam Byrne, chief secretary to the Treasury, told the Commons a compensation schem was being put together.

But Altrincham and Sale West MP Mr Brady believes the scheme will be means-tested and many will lose out on compensation to which they are entitled.

Mr Brady said: "Ministers are being shockingly complacent. Fifteen people a day are dying without receiving the compensation that is rightfully theirs and many others are living in extreme hardship."
