A HALE Barns woman has won a coveted Teacher of the Year Award.

Ellie Brookes, 29, scooped the prized gong after employing a number of innovative ideas in the classroom to engage her pupils, once even setting up a ‘Big Brother’ style house where she was able to set tasks from which youngsters could learn.

Her creative thinking was recognised at a ceremony held at The Lowry in Salford.

“I found out in December I’d been nominated with a Christmas card from the actual awards people,” she explained. “The deputy head had nominated me.

“The next thing I found out they were coming to see me in school to watch me teach, which meant I’d got through the next stage. It was quite nerve wracking but what was worse was they spoke to my colleagues and pupils about me as a teacher, which was quite scary.”

Ellie, of Elmridge Drive, attended the awards bash at The Lowry still thinking she wouldn’t win, but said she was shell shocked when her name was read out.

“I couldn’t believe it when my name was read out last. I had to get up on stage and make a speech but it was the worst speech in the world as I hadn’t prepared one. I really didn’t think I was going to win,” she added.

Ellie now goes into the national finals which will be televised on BBC2 in October.

Headteacher for Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe - where Ellie teaches - Wiktor Daron, added:“We are delighted with Ellie’s achievement, the award recognises the skill, passion and devotion which she brings to her work.

“Ellie has boundless enthusiasm and total commitment to her pupils. Her pupils are always engaged and she rewards all levels of success, whether they have natural talent or are developing new skills, Ellie ensures that everyone gets an opportunity to perform.

“The influence of such an outstanding teacher on the lives of our pupils and their families cannot be underestimated.”

“I would like to thank her wholeheartedly for the important contribution she has made to Saint Paul’s. She is a shining example to all!”
