BUDDING young artists from Sale Grammar School found were celebrating their achievements in the ‘Art Meets Science’ challenge.

Year 9 and 12 pupils at the Marlborough Road school were challenged to develop a unique, relevant and contemporary artwork for the reception at Manchester’s Paterson Institute for Cancer Research.

Winning entrants from each year group were announced at a special awards ceremony last Monday.

Professor Nic Jones, PICR said: “We’ve been extremely impressed by the quality and maturity of the artwork and tremendous talent on show. The pupils have obviously embraced the challenge and produced some very exciting art.”

Headteacher, David Wilson, added: “Getting involved in projects like this is very important for the students’ development.

“It gives them a real experience of life as a working artist – how to approach an artistic commission by interpreting a brief to provide a finished product that meets or exceeds client expectations.”

Winners received a gift voucher from an art supplies shop so they can continue to deverlop their talent. Winning entrants were: Alex Fraser and Sophie Whittaker in Year 12 who were joint first prize winners, each receiving a £75 voucher; Carys Templer, Lucy Crichton, Sabrina Macdonald and Victoria Hong who were Year 12 runners-up, each receiving a £40 voucher; Nicola Slade, Kiera Wells, Lucy Aylott and Hannah Moffat Year 9 canvas joint winners, each receiving a £30 voucher; and Eleanor Simpson Year 9 painting winner who received a £30 voucher; and Alice Stephenson Year 9 runner-up who received a £25 voucher.

“The pupils’ work really brightens our Institute and brings a flavour of the community into our research environment. Working with a local school has been a very rewarding experience – and one which we hope will be repeated as a regular challenge,” said PICR professor, Nic Jones.
