The Rotary Club of Altrincham held a Purple4Polio day in Altrincham.

They set up stall on Geroge Street to sell crocus corms and had a tombola which attracted lots of shoppers.

The aim was to sell as many crocus corms as possible to help their Purple4polio initiative, which aims to eradicate polio worldwide. The scheme was started by Rotary 30 years ago and, together with the World Health Organisation, it has helped make polio a thing of the past in more than 100 countries worldwide.

There are now only two countries where polio still occurs, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The money by Rotary raised goes towards the worldwide collection for more vaccines. Over 130 million children in India will be vaccinated next year. This is the second year that polio has been absent in India. UK Rotary volunteers will be travelling to help co ordinate this mass event.

The crocus which are being planted are set to turn areas of Altrincham into a purple carpet next spring.

A variety of groups, including Friends groups at Denzell Gardens and John Leigh Park and schools have all helped plant the bulbs.

Organiser for the event, Rotarian Karen Wroe, expects to see masses of crocus next spring throughout the area.

Donations are still being accepted at altrinchamrotary.org
