WHEN wearing his crimson, fur lined robes, Alan Laver looks every inch a mayor.

But, although Altrincham has had a Mayor since 1489, with a brief pause from 1937, Altrincham Court Leet has named the post, Provost since Trafford Council appointed its own mayor in 1974.

He said: “Apart from chairing the monthly meetings of the Court Leet, I am the court’s public face, saying nice things to people and opening events in the town.

“I was thrilled and a little worried when I chaired my first meeting recently but it seemed to go down all right.

“It feels good to be in charge and I hope that the members of the Court Leet will help me during the year.

“I was appointed by the Barony which is the managing agent for the Court and also the agent for the late Earl of Stamford.”

The original Court Leet was started after Altrincham market opened in 1290. It dealt with petty disputes.

“Originally called the Portmote, it was an early form of Local Government,” said Alan.

Alan, in his 60s, believes it is still relevant today.

“The Court Leet has been a force for good in Altrincham and, in concert with other organisations, has created improvements which the council is not funded to do.

“We keep posts such as Chimney Looker for fun, but positions such as Market Looker and Ale Taster are still relevant today.”

Alan, who was the court’s clerk for three years, is involved in planning a 2017 Charter dinner at the Cresta Court to which the town's dignitaries and leaders will be invited.

The new Provost follows in the footsteps of his wife, Denise, who held the post between 2013 and 2015.
