ALTRINCHAM Ramblers' Club is continuing to put its best foot forward as it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

The club was founded in September 1956 by a small group of keen walkers placing an advert in a former Altrincham newspaper, and it now has a membership of more than 250 people.

Special walks and social events are taking place during September, culminating in a celebratory dinner at Altrincham Football Ground to recognise the club’s long history of providing physical enjoyment and new friendships for its members.

Walks are organised in three different categories, varying from approximately five to 12 miles, and covering a wide range of beautiful countryside within easy reach of Manchester, including the Dark and White Peak areas around Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, and the Yorkshire and Lancashire Dales and North Wales.

Walks are held on Wednesdays and Sundays every week throughout the year, with an initial time set for meeting behind Altrincham railway station.

Club leaders check out each walk and report directions to the start place in the monthly programme. In the summer, coach outings are arranged for members to walk or relax in other scenic areas such as Snowdonia, the North Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.

The club also holds a variety of social meetings and visits to places of overall interest, and an annual walking holiday in more distant scenic parts of England and Wales.

Anyone, at any age, who is interested to find out more is welcome to browse through the club’s website, www.altrincham-ramblers.org.uk, where they will find more detailed information, including dates of scheduled walks for anyone to join members a welcome guest.
