THE UK’s first Small Business Commissioner, Paul Uppal, is coming to Trafford to meet with local business owners.

The evening, organised by Altrincham and Sale Chamber of Commerce, will take place on May 8 and is free to attend for local firms.

Mr Uppal — a long-standing champion of small businesses — will update attendees on the work his office is doing in tackling the poor payment terms which can often leave small businesses struggling to survive.

He said: “I am really looking forward to meeting with Trafford businesses at the Altrincham and Sale Chamber of Commerce event. This is an opportunity for me to discuss how my Office can support small businesses and ensure fair payment practices across the UK.”

Mr Uppal’s office is campaigning for a traffic light warning system for large businesses after it was revealed that 65 per cent of them take longer than 30 days to pay their bills.

The event will take place at the Robins & Day car showroom, in Washway Road, which will be transformed for the evening, with cars moved out of the way to create the perfect space for Mr Uppal’s address.

There will also be drinks and nibbles and afterwards there will be an opportunity to network with other businesses from around the borough.

Sue Aldridge, CEO of Altrincham and Sale Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted to bring such a renowned champion of small business to Trafford.

“Sale and Altrincham is teaming with some amazing small businesses and we want to do everything we can to help them thrive.

“Late and delayed payments are a huge problem facing small businesses, interrupting cashflow and putting owners in a precarious situation. We cannot wait for Mr Uppal to share his knowledge on this vital issue.”

As Small Business Commissioner, Mr Uppal can handle complaints from small businesses about unfair payment practices. To find out more, head to smallbusinesscommissioner.gov.uk
