A JUDGE slapped fines totalling £5,500 on Manchester City footballer Michael Johnson for two drink driving offences.

Last week, the 24-year-old mid fielder appeared at the City’s magistrates’ court the day before United ace Danny Welbeck had been dealt with for speeding.

District Judge Khalid Qureshi heard how Johnson had ploughed his black Mercedes into the back of a BMW parked near his home in Urmston at 3.40 a.m. on May 31.

The BMW was shunted several yards along Grangethorpe Road and demolished the garden wall of a house.

At the time he was on bail for a suspected drink driving incident. He ended up on a grass verge with knee and head injuries.

A blood sample taken after he had attended hospital showed him to be just over the limit.

On February 23 – the day before his birthday – Johnson was seen speeding in excess of the 40 mph limit in the same car going towards the city centre.

He was stopped at the Bridgewater viaduct and gave a positive roadside breath test.

At the police station Johnson elected to give a blood sample and this was found to be 16 milligrams above the legal limit, the court heard.

Johnson of Grange Crescent, Urmston, was fined £3,000 with £400 costs for driving when unfit from drink in May.

For the offence in February – driving after consuming excess alcohol – he was fined another £2,500.

Johnson admitted both offences and was given a three year driving ban on both charges to run concurrently.
