GREATER Manchester Police have revealed 83 firearms and 1,600 rounds of ammunition were surrendered during the first week of their gun hand-in amnesty.

In Trafford four guns - including a Winchester Double Barrel Shotgun - have been handed in.

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Jones said: "It is a very encouraging start, particularly because of the quality and range of firearms being surrendered so far, is so good.

"But we know there are still plenty more illegally-held weapons out there and I urge anyone in possession of one, or who knows someone who is, to take this opportunity to get rid of them before another innocent young life is lost."

Although people can hand in their guns with complete anonymity, the hand in will not give immunity to a gun that has been used in a crime.

A GMP spokeswoman explained: "There can be no question of granting immunity to a person who has committed a violent crime with a firearm merely because that gun has been surrendered during the hand in."

People have until October 31 to surrender any illegally held weapons, imitation firearms, air guns, ammunition and any other unwanted guns.
