COMMUNITIES came together on Tuesday to welcome Greater Manchester Police into their new home.

Faith leaders and councillors were among more than 100 people who celebrated the official opening of the new force headquarters at Central Park, in Newton Heath.

This marks GMP’s move from its former base at Trafford’s Chester House, on Boyer Street.

A speech from Chief Constable Peter Fahy was followed with a presentation by primary school pupils from across the area.

Children from 10 schools, including Partington Primary School, represented the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester.

Pupils from each school presented Ch Con Fahy with a piece of artwork inspired by community, faith and policing.

When put together, the 10 pieces form a map of Greater Manchester and will be displayed in the atrium of the new building.

The ceremony ended with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

Ch Con Peter Fahy said: “It is fitting that this building is being opened by school children. It reminds everyone that our overriding duty is to serve people and ensure that the maximum possible effort is put into the protection of the public by reducing financial overheads.”
