AN APPEAL has been launched to recruit new volunteers for a pioneer scheme that is helping to free up thousands of hours of extra time for Greater Manchester Police officers to go out and fight crime.

The Appropriate Adult' scheme, the first of its kind in the country, is a round the clock service run by volunteers aimed at supporting juveniles or vulnerable adults while in custody.

Volunteers when on call are attending to detainees in custody on average at the moment in less than two hours - helping to reduce greatly the time people are held.

The role includes looking after the detainee's welfare, explaining police procedures and providing information about their rights.

Derek Osbaldestin, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA), said: "The work of an Appropriate Adult' is very varied and can be extremely rewarding.

"The scheme aims to reflect as accurately as possible the makeup of the community and we welcome both male and female volunteers from all walks of life and of any age or ethnic background."

Appropriate Adult' volunteers are given initial training and receive on-going support. Volunteers are expected to undertake a minimum of four shifts a month.
