AN animation artist has been nominated for a Children’s BAFTA after directing a cartoon featuring acting legend David Jason.

Vincent James, from Ashton-on-Mersey, was shortlisted for the Children’s Animation category of the prestigious awards for his work on CBBC’s Muddle Earth, a parody of Tolkien Classic Lord Of The Rings.

Only Fools and Horses’ David Jason took on the voice of lead character Randalf and Vincent, of Green Lane, said: “He was great to work with. When he walked in it was one of those moments when you’re lost for words.”

The story board artist learned about the nomination, which is also for his colleague and the show’s producer Phil Chalk, from Oldham, last Monday.

This will culminate in the pair attending a glittering ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane this Sunday (November 27).

Vincent added: “It was a complete surprise and it’s a first for me so I’m incredibly excited.”

Muddle Earth was broadcast in spring 2010 and the series consisted of two series of thirteen 11-minute episodes.

Vincent started learning his craft 25 years ago at Cosgrove Hall Films, the Chorlton-based powerhouse behind classic cartoon Danger Mouse and Wind In The Willows, which also both starred David Jason Since then he has had a hand in creating Count Duckula, Roary The Racing car, voiced by Peter Kay, and Raa Raa The Noisy Lion, which he worked on with Curtis Jobling, who was the production designer on Bob The Builder.

This led to him winning the Italian Golden Pulcinella award, which recognises animated TV series.

The 48-year-old now works alongside son Ryan, aged 22, at recently formed production company Factory Transmedia, on Tribune Avenue, in Broadheath.

Vincent, whose partner is Lesley, aged 45, said: “We have a couple of new projects on the go but you’ll have to wait and see what they are!”
