TOWN centre licensees in Altrincham, Hale and Bowdon are being urged to enter this year's third annual Best Bar None award scheme.

The overall winner will be presented with a plaque and a £1,000 advertising prize at a special prize ceremony in November.

Last year's winner of the competition - that aims to reward safe venues, which take their customers safety seriously - was The Slug and Lettuce pub in Altrincham.

Pc Karen Packer, Altrincham's licensing officer, said: "We are determined to reduce incidents of crime and disorder associated with consumption of alcohol.

"The competition is an excellent way of promoting the Altrincham area as a safe and professional environment in which to live, work and socialise."

Area Insp Simon Wright added: "Police in Altrincham are continually working with the licensed premises and our partners on this important issue.

"We all share the same objective - to maintain a safe environment where visitors to Altrincham and its residents can enjoy the town centre in safety. I encourage all on licensed premises to join in this year's event."

Entrants will be judged on various categories including their door, drink and drugs policy, crime prevention strategy and emergency procedures.

Premises accredited under the scheme will receive a certificate for public display. Highly commended and commended winners will receive plaques.

The closing date for this year's competition is October 31. To apply for an application form or for further information phone Pc Karen Packer on 0161 856 0195 .
