Fishmongers at Fish Plaice in Sale have been recognised for providing a quality service to their customers.

And a reader reckons that the committed and friendly staff makes the shop well worth being added to our Counter Action 'roll of honour'.

Owner Daryl Laycock, who lives in Fleetwood, gets up at 5am every day to buy fish from Fleetwood's market, before driving to his shop in Sale. He said: "This way I can guarantee that the fish is fresh each day."

He added: "We have been here for over six years now and see around 1,000 regular faces in the course of the week, and have got to know our customers really well."

Daryl believes that the secret to a successful business is commitment to customers and their needs and good quality produce. He said: "The shop's motto is every customer gets treated as we would like to be treated ourselves."

The shop's staff comprises of Daryl and new employee Dean.

Daryl said of the nomination: "It is great that people actually appreciate what we are doing and it's nice to get feedback from our customers."

Reader Lorna McLauchlan, who nominated the shop, said: "Daryl and Dean are always consistently the most welcoming sales staff I have had the pleasure to meet. This is even in sub zero temperatures when their hands are red raw from the cold and a bowl of hot water is kept on the counter to warm their hands between sales.

"The public have no problem with queuing in the cold for their goods as they are always entertained by the local friendly conversation and chit chat."
