Harriers Go so Close

BOTH the men's and women's teams from Sale Harriers Manchester finished the Track & Field season in style by achieving a runner-up double in the National Athletics Cup final at Bedford.

The women were deprived of retaining the trophy they won last year by losing three of their top stars through international obligations.

It was necessary for Keri Maddox to leave on Friday for Portugal and Diane Modahl for Spain in preparation for the forthcoming World Cup and Ann Griffiths was selected for the GB v United States match.

Despite this, the team fought magnificently, only conceding defeat to league champions Shaftsbury late in the match.

Sale scooped the most gold medals with Amy Waterlow winning the 3000 metres, Mari Bjone the 400m Hurdles, Lorraine Shaw the hammer and Philippa Roles the discus.

Paula Fryer came second in the 800 metres and Emily Jackson third in the high jump, Philippa Roles also placing third in the shot.

17 year old Samantha Lowe came close to a personal best in the javelin against the country's top throwers.

The men gave the star studded Belgrave team a good run for their money, gold medals coming from Allyn Condon 100 metres, Tony Borsumato 400m hurdles, Darren Ritcie long jump and Stephon Haywood in the shot.

The Harriers have been voted the top all round club in the UK and it is virtually a foregone conclusion that they will retain this honour.

Two cup dates are still to come for the men and women with the National Junior Cup Final and McDonalds Cup final just around the corner.
