FOR TRAFFORD

Trafford MV 15

Warrington 36

IN MILD January conditions and on a perfect MacPherson Park pitch Trafford entertained a strong Warrington side who were intent on progressing further than this first round of the Lancashire Trophy.

Trafford were far from full strength but were pleased to have John Shay back at No. 8 following suspension.

Warrington were close to full strength and their close links with Warrington RLFC provided a back division with plenty of pace and power.

Trafford's forwards, as always, put up a determined show but the difference in quality between the backs was there for everybody to see.

Two early tries gave the visitors the cushion they needed to be able to throw the ball about and from the outset MV knew they had a job on their hands.

Warrington maintained their pressure throughout and despite Trafford keeping in contention with tries from Mike Worrall and John Shay together with a conversion and penalty from Gallagher it was always a noticeably better side from Warrington that were going to take the honours.

Trafford were keen to keep the home support entertained and nobody went further in this aim than scrum half Pete Lambert who on top of his probing runs and pin point passing also had a spontaneous attempt at a drop goal luckily charged down late in the game.

Warrington ran in four further tries and with three conversions the scoring was completed for a derserved Warrington win.

Trafford MV's Millenium celebrations already seemed a thousand years away!

This weekend Trafford are back in League action with a visit from Millom, the side that MV earned their first League points of the season against in late November.

Since then MV's League form has improved dramatically and they will be gutted if they do not record a win in this game.

Having said this, they will be missing their rock-like prop John Bailey and youngster Mike Peel will be having a late fitness test.

Kick off will be at 2.30pm at Traffords Finney Bank Road ground.

Trafford are looking to strengthen their playing squads at all levels, but are especially keen to hear from speedy backs who feel they could make an impression at first and second team levels.

If you need a change to start the New Millenium get down to Trafford MV and play for your local Rugby Union club.
