IN the last six weeks, I have witnessed two accidents in which a car driver was using a mobile phone.

The first involved the driver losing control of the car while negotiating a mini roundabout and carrying on a phone conversation at the same time and the second accident involved braking to avoid a dog with only one hand on the steering wheel. The car ended up on the pavement.

Neither accident, fortunately, involved a personal injury, but they could very easily have done so. Lack of concentration, plus driving with only one hand on the steering wheel, is surely the cause of many accidents today though difficult to prove unless witnessed.

The Government launched a publicity campaign in 1998 to warn of the dangers of using a mobile whilst driving. I believe, very strongly, that there should now be specific legislation to ban their use in cars. I would be interested to know the views of readers.
