IT WAS a big day for a Flixton woman this week when she reached the big 100 mark and received a telegram from The Queen. And Amy Williams celebrated her century on Tuesday with a visit from the Mayor at a party at the Urmston Cottage Residential Home where she now lives. The new centenarian was born in Moorside Road and has spent her whole life in the area - before moving into the Greenfield Avenue home two years ago. One of 16 children, Amy was educated at Marlborough Road and Moorside Road schools and met husband Arthur while roller skating at the Stretford rink. They were married at St. Michael's church in 1923 and settled in the area - having five children. Arthur died in 1984. Amy has eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She worked until she was 80 years old, most of her working life being spent at the Palace Cinema in Urmston. And most of her family were on hand this week to make sure that she celebrated reaching three figures in style.
