BURGLARY is a constant problem throughout the whole of Trafford but there are ways to deter thieves.

Billboard has already covered the first line of defence with exterior lighting and burglar alarms but there are even cheaper ways to put off opportunists.

And police say that a few simple measures to give the impression that someone is at home do work.

Community safety officer at Altrincham, PC Tony Crompton tells SAM: "Burglars do not want to be disturbed and you can convince them that someone is at home, for example by leaving the lights on.

"Technology has now made it even easier to fit things like plug-in timer controls for lamps and light switches.

"This is much better as it gives the impression that someone is in the house rather than just leaving the hall light on."

PC Crompton adds that similar timers for radios and stereos can be as good, especially if the radio is tuned into a station that involves more talking than music.

He also says that closing curtains is also a good idea, either letting a trusted neighbour do it while you're away or closing them using electronic devices.

He adds: "All these little things can help put off burglars who prefer to attack when no-one is at home.

"It can be very cost-effective to fit gadgets that allow things to be switched on at certain times and will save heartbreak in the future."
