TRAFFORD bobbies are warning people to be vigilant in the wake of the terrorist attacks on America and the on-going issues in the Middle East.

The move comes as part of new Home Office guidelines issued after a flood of calls to community safety police from worried residents.

But officers say that the advice is aimed at increasing awareness rather than alarming people of the threat of further terrorist attacks.

Community safety officer for south Trafford, PC Tony Crompton tells SAM: "I think it is right to reassure the public who have been in touch recently and offer advice for them if they are suspicious.

"In the unlikely event of anyone receiving a bomb threat phone call there are simple initial measures to remember.

"Try to stay calm - although I know that's easier said than done - and if you have telephone recording equipment then activate it.

"If you have caller display systems, take down the number and make an exact note of what the caller says before calling 999 straight after the call and then putting any company policies into operation."

PC Crompton says that the police will then attend immediately and help deal with the matter.

He goes on: "There has also been talk about chemical weapons being used.

"The Home Office advice to anyone finding a suspect package in their post is: -

Do not open it;

Don't pass it around;

Place it in a clear sealable plastic bag if unopened;

If opened, leave it where it is, shut the windows in the room, turn off the air conditioning if there is any and evacuate all floors below the room the item is on, the room itself and the floor above;

Dial 999 and state clearly that you believe a chemical or biological material is involved."

PC Crompton adds that there are not many groups who are potential targets for terrorism but if anyone is concerned they should get in touch with their local community safety officer for advice.

There are also two Home Office guides available for anyone who wants a copy and these are available by leaving your details on the dedicated crime prevention line on 856-7777.

To get in touch with your local community safety officer call PC Tony Crompton (south Trafford) on 856-7546, or PC Paul Berry and Mark Aspin (north Trafford) on 856-7746.
