BOWDON Rugby Club were promoted for the third successive season on Saturday following a 37-12 win over Runcorn at Clay Lane

The win means they take their place in the South Lancashire/Cheshire league.

Their tries came from fullback Chris Flanagan (2), centres Galu Lietu and Eddie Bredenhann and blindside Mike Billington, while stand-off Dave Grahame kicked a couple of penalties and three conversions.

Bowdon's pre-Christmas results laid the foundation for this season's success and they will hope to recapture and sustain that excellent defensive record if they are to contend again next year.

Openside Bob Nicholson stood out in the pack all year and Woody Barlow and Galu Letiu in particular often provided game turning moments in the backs.

Veteran number eight Tom Fleming shouldered much of the lineout burden and did a difficult job well.

It is no coincidence that Bowdon's re-emergence comes during the tenure of Eddie Bredenhann as player/coach, assisted by the experienced Tony Bennett as forwards coach. By any measure it is a fine achievement in just three seasons.

Next campaign Bowdon will host sides such as Wilmslow, Aldwinians and Northwich and they are now within sight of Broughton Park, Winnington Park, Kersal and Lymm, all of whom will be in the league above.

Anyone interested in playing rugby at a friendly and vibrant club will be welcome at summer training and should contact the club for further information (0161 980 8321).

This Sunday (May 4) is the 54th Bowdon Sevens tournament at Clay Lane, which promises once again to be an enjoyable and well supported day.
