THE women's team from Sale Harriers Manchester captured the only major honour that has ever eluded them by winning the National Senior Six Stage Road Relay Championship at Birmingham on Saturday.

This prestigious event is only in its third year and the Harriers achieved second place in the 2001 inaugural meeting, missing out by only two seconds, coming fourth in 2002 with a depleted team.

For a change Sale were able to call on a strong squad and they collected the title by an amazing four minute margin.

Sonia Thomas got the ball rolling, coming in fifth in a highly competitive first leg, and young Donna Riding improved the situation by pulling back two places.

Jenny Heath then bombed ahead giving the Harriers a lead of over one minute, Amy Waterlow maintaining the advantage in the fourth stage.

Laura McCreesh piled on another two minutes and Kerry Gillibrand ran the third fastest time of the day, finishing the job in style.

With the winter season put to bed, Sale can now look forward to an exciting track and field season, with the European Cup in Valencia next month high on the agenda.
