A FINANCIAL adviser who was diagnosed with cancer after suffering from a sore throat is gearing up for a charity run.

And Mike Sammon, from Old Trafford, is challenging men and women to help beat the disease by joining him in Cancer Research UK’s Run 10k.

MIke and his friend Peter Birch, from Altrincham, aim to raise as much money as possible for the charity when they take part in the event at Tatton Park in Cheshire on September 27.

The 44-year-old, who has never smoked, was shocked to be diagnosed with throat cancer in November 2007.

He had visited the GP with a persistent sore throat before undergoing a biopsy.

As Mike, who has been involved with theatres throughout the borough for many years, was diagnosed at an early stage, he did not require surgery.

However, he underwent chemotherapy at the Christie followed by 20 sessions of radiotherapy and completed all the cancer treatment by March 2008.

Mike, who is married to Norma, said: “Taking part in the Cancer Research UK 10k at Tatton Park is my way of supporting the charity to help future generations who are diagnosed with the disease.

“So many of my friends have made the effort to get involved in charity runs since I was diagnosed that I decided it was only right I should do the same myself.

“Being diagnosed with throat cancer was such a huge shock, but my wife and I have remained as positive as possible and I feel fortunate that I didn’t have to undergo surgery.”
