FAST food chain McDonalds closed it’s last remaining high street store in Trafford on Saturday, shutting their Stretford Mall restaurant out of the blue.

The company, which closed its Altrincham branch earlier this year, now has only three restaurants in the borough, one at Trafford Park in Urmston, another at Altrincham Retail Park, Broadheath, and one at The Trafford Centre.

In a statement the firm blamed the ‘changing trading conditions’ over the last few years for the closure, but said there had been no job losses as a result.

“The store had come to the end of its lease at the Mall and we made the decision not to renew,” said company spokeswoman Alison Purvis.

“But I’m pleased to say all of the managers and all staff have been offered employment at other local branches.

“There are about five McDonalds restaurants within a three mile radius of Stretford Mall.

“Staff who incur higher travel costs travelling to their new jobs will also be reimbursed.

She added: “Trading conditions have been changing for the past four years and we’ve opened a number of drive through restaurants in the area recently which are more relevant to our business.

“In fact, we are currently looking to open a drive through in the Stretford area,” she said.

The departure of such a big high street name from the Mall follows hot on the heels of Woolworths, which also closed for good earlier on the same day with the loss of around 20 jobs.

Clothes retailer Adams, who revealed on Sunday administrators had been called in, also have a branch at the Mall.
