A 24-year-old man has tragically died after police were called to a concern for welfare incident on a motorway in Bolton last night, Friday.
Officers were sent to the M61 Eastbound near to the Cleggs Lane bridge between Farnworth and Little Hulton at around 11pm.
Emergency services treated him on the motorway but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
The man's family have been informed and are being supported by officers.
A GMP spokesperson said: "Shortly before 11pm on Friday, October 11, we responded to a concern for welfare on the M61 Eastbound carriageway beneath Cleggs Lane, Bolton.
"Unfortunately, a 24-year-old sadly died at the scene despite emergency services best efforts.
"His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
"There are no suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner. The motorway has since reopened."
The M61 was closed for more than seven hours on both sides of the carriageway, with diversions put in place.
It was partially reopened at around 6.20am and then fully reopened at 7am.
