Two men were arrested in connection with an incident in which a police officer was struck by a van in Sale.

The police officer was one of those in attendance at a call on Beech Road at around 10.10pm on Sunday.

GMP Trafford said he was struck by a van which was "deliberately driven" at him after which he was taken into hospital for treatment on a broken shin.

Two men were arrested in connection with the incident, a 32-year-old on suspicion of attempted murder and a 30-year-old on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Walton, of GMP Trafford, said: "Our officers put themselves out there on the streets every day to keep our communities safe. They do not expect to be targeted in such a way.

"Thankfully we had a quick response and we have two suspects arrested and in custody. Our investigation is progressing and there is no threat to the public.

"This is a clear example of the bravery of our officers in putting themselves in harm's way every day across Greater Manchester.

"We wish the injured officer a full recovery and hope for them to be back on the streets and taking the fight to the criminals of Greater Manchester very soon."
