A BARRY Island ice cream store is closing down.
Cadwaladers, on Paget Road, is set to shut its doors on Monday, May 6.
The reason for the closure is said to be because of the economic climate and a downturn in business.
It’s a blow for Barry as the island enters into the tourist season.
In a thin silver lining to the news, staff are said to be being retained at other Cadwalader outlets in Wales.
Cadwaladers has three stores in South Wales (including the Barry Island one set to close) with the other two in Cardiff Bay and Porthcawl.
The ice cream and coffee company has one site in West Wales in Tenby and three sites in North Wales in Criccieth, Porthmadog and Betws-y-Coed.
The Cadwaladers Ice Cream story began in 1927.
The Cadwalader family lived in Criccieth in Gwynedd, North Wales. There they made and sold their closely guarded secret recipe, vanilla ice cream, from the window of their Criccieth general store.
The company, including the secret recipe and the actual Criccieth store, originally changed hands in the 1980’s.
Besides being a specialist ice cream store, Cadwaladers also serves exclusive and specially developed blend of coffee in a range of bespoke hot drinks, a delicious and unique hot chocolate blend and speciality teas together with a wide range of cold beverages, including smoothies, frappes and fresh ice cream milk shakes.
