One of the founding members of a Ceredigion hospice at home charity is stepping down.

Dr Alan Axford, the chairman of the hospice at home charity HAHAV, has decided to step down from his role.

He has been a driving force for HAHAV since it was established in 2015 and the charity has grown substantially under his leadership.

During his tenure, Dr Axford's leadership allowed the charity to establish itself as an invaluable service within the community.

This is down to his passion for healthcare as he said: "I was always disappointed that Ceredigion did not have a dedicated hospice, the only county in Wales without one."

Following a distinguished career in medicine, including a 12-year tenure as medical director of Bronglais Hospital, Dr Axford transitioned his skills and dedication to the charity sector.

His endeavours to establish HAHAV were rooted in a belief that it would be primarily volunteer-led.

Observing its growth, Dr Axford said: "I am delighted with the way everything has developed, especially in the recent years with the purchase of Plas Antaron and the increased volunteer presence across the county.

"This is not a one-person organisation and I have a debt of thanks to fellow board members, all the volunteers and the staff who have given so much to the charity."

The incoming chairwoman, Gwerfyl Pierce Jones, praised Dr Axford's dedication and role within the charity, stating his impact will continue to be felt: "When anyone mentions HAHAV, the name of Alan Axford is usually mentioned in the same breath as they are so closely interlinked."

She announced that the board has unanimously agreed to bestow on him the title of honorary president, promising his guidance will continue to be invaluable to herself and others.
