A woman feared she would die after her partner poured brick cleaner on to her face after a night out, a court heard.

The victim said her life had been made a 'living hell' since the terrifying attack.

Matthew Kenner carried out the attack after the pair became separated after a night out.

After she made her way home, Kenner he sent vile messages saying she was an “embarrassment” and “the sooner you die the better.”

And when the 46-year-old came home he said "if you do not get out (of the house) in 20 seconds I'll..."

The woman returned to bed but Kenner came into the room and threw acid based brick  cleaner on her face.

Bolton Crown Court heard after Kenner had pleaded guilty to the attack he tried to vacate his plea but was denied the chance to do so.

He appeared in court to be sentenced for actual bodily harm and malicious communication.

The court heard the woman, who was first aid trained, had gone to wash off the liquid and called the police.

She was taken to hospital and had reddening to her right forehead and right cheek.

She still has scabbing on her face, the court heard.

When Kenner was arrested in Longsight Park, Harwood, he said he had simply thrown water onto her.

Following his arrest over the incident in August 2022 he had been remanded in custody for 11 months before being granted bail.

Michelle Brown, prosecuting, read a victim impact statement from the partner of Kenner.

It said: “My attacker was the person who I had lived with for eight years.

“I thought he wanted me to die and I thought I would die.

“I have suffered from anxiety.

“I will likely be in counselling for many years to come.

“The last two years have been a living hell what I would not wish on my worst enemy.”

"I have moments where I can taste the acid and feel it."

Kenner, representing himself, claimed he had not been overly intoxicated at the time and said the injuries were not what the complainant had claimed.

He told the court the malicious messages came about because she had not called him a taxi and he had been forced to walk home in another man’s shoes, as he claimed she had taken one of his shoes with her.

Judge Elliot Knopf said: “This was an outrageous and appalling treatment of your partner in a domestic context.

"Violence in a domestic context is so serious.

“It is a breach of trust and of local and loyalty you owe.”

But he said that due to the time Kenner had already spent in prison further custody was not appropriate.

He placed in on a community order to last for 18 month.

He ordered the man from Hope Avenue, Bradshaw, to do the Building Better Relationships Programme, 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days and complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

He also imposed a restraining order to last indefinitely.
